Inconceivable complexity and echo-chambered, undiversified, social isolation are perhaps the greatest enemies plaguing the world today. “It must be hard to be human”, I tell myself when I manage to muster a sliver of complex nuance within a sliver, of a sliver, of a sliver, of a studied realm. Extrapolating that microcosmic sliver of understanding to the scale of macrocosmic, worldwide perspective becomes a task of inordinate intellect; of which per se is merely, you guessed it – a sliver. What a beautifully complex world with infinite issues that require unending diligence to improve.

Herein, lies the crux: the individual, egotistical, limited human wading in a universe of dependence. We as individuals are intelligent, creative, industrious, and flawed – in teams, groups, and nations, even more so… We simply have no choice but to share the same breathed atmosphere, drink the same water-cycles, and absorb the same sweetly radiating sun. Every time a bomb drops, we fail. Every time we curse our opponents, we fail. Our opponents are our teachers as are our failures, as long as we actually learn and finally fail to repeat our mistakes. Unfortunately, we have failed to learn the most fundamental lessons of history: sustainability and balance of life. The mistake we repeatedly echo is the growth-and-crash cycle; we grow and burgeon until the swelled-state bursts. So, what is our insanity (…making the same mistakes expecting a different outcome)? I’m honestly not sure. I suspect it is the combination of limited mind and the selfish gene burdened with short-sighted solutions in a vastness of time and selective truth. What I mean by that is, a failure of the political centre, a failure of language, a failure of cooperation, a failure of perspective, a failure to listen: a simple failure of understanding the bio-psycho-social-economic-environmental interdependence in which we quintessentially inhabit. We are not and have never been alone. Our individual voices have never been, and will never be, insignificant. There isn’t air because we have lungs…we have lungs because there is air. After every extinction life rebounds ever-more flourishing. We, life, emerge animate from the inanimate as a fundamental structure of the physical universe where it permits. We are connected to the deepest complexity of all. We are the ‘Goldilocks’ species embodied within our little sliver of the Universe. We are the organisation of chaos. Therefore, we should act and organise like that which are born to be, for that we are embodied to become. Every bomb of aggression, every undemocratic policy, and every ill-conceived profiting enterprise is a regression to chaos.

We fail to learn because we fail to teach. We are so terribly disinformed. We are fundamentally at fault for our own disinformation because we persistently fail to contextualise the basics, enable the decentralisation of discourse. We simply must reclaim the classroom. How can we have an aging population and have student-teacher ratios of 30:1? At what point did we fail to realise that the act of teaching is simultaneously an act of learning? Why do we fail to understand that our most valuable resource is the youngest among us? Why do we fail to understand that if we neglect our youth, if we fail to properly incentivise and compensate teachers, then we are criminally negligent towards our own communities and future? Why do we fail to engage our pedagogy into the deepest issues we face as a species? Why do we presume the natural state of man is war? Why do we presume human beings are inherently lazy? Why do we presume that competition and scarcity is fundamental for success? We fail because we are desperate to survive and sequester our own mortality and shame. Our minds have disassociated from our associations and knowledge has become an elusive. We have become dependent on monetary shadows instead of friendship and the pursuit of truth. We assume the extremes are the only options and implemented models are made of indestructible stone.

Knowledge is the space in between the questions we have the courage to ask; and the truth is artistry of asking shrewd questions. One might argue that this is the embodiment of humility. ‘Answers’ are to mathematical theory, as questions are to wisdom - all the work is in between. We must start by asking the right questions. Why not…it’s as good a place to start as any.
